The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4), at The University of Southern Mississippi, supports the advancement of sport safety and security through training, professional development, academic programs and research. NCS4 collaborates with professional leagues, open access events, intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics, along with professional associations, private sector firms, and government agencies. It is a critical resource for sport venue managers, event managers, first responders, and other key stakeholders.
The NCS4 certification programs help ensure that individuals responsible for the safe and secure operations of sports venues have the requisite knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform their assigned duties.
- Certified Sport Venue Staff (CSVS)
- Certified Sport Security Professional (CSSP)
Certified Sport Venue Staff Certification
This Certified Sport Venue Staff (CSVS) designation is the nation’s first comprehensive sport and special event security credential for individuals seeking to become front line venue and event staff. The CSVS certification is a two-part credential composed of a training certificate coupled with a background screening component that is valid for three years. The CSVS program is designed to assure that individuals who are responsible for a specific post, duty, or detail as part of an overall event operation plan have a working knowledge of safety and security procedures specific to their role.
These individuals take instructions from the line supervisor level, are in direct contact with spectators, staff and/or vendors and are responsible for a narrow scope of duties and responsibilities. This certification includes, but is not limited to: ushers, bag checkers, security personnel, event staff, guest service staff, parking attendants, ticket takers, concession personnel, housekeeping and cleaning; and merchandise personnel who have demonstrated a certain level of knowledge and /or skills, and have passed a background screening.
Certified Sport Security Professional Certification
The Certified Sport Security Professional (CSSP) certification is designed to establish standardized competencies among individuals holding leadership positions in the sports security industry and to ensure that the most current techniques, strategies and solutions are used to mitigate safety and security risks inherent to spectator sports venues.
The Certified Sport Security Professional designation will be awarded to individuals at the middle and upper levels of an organization who are in leadership roles responsible for the planning and overall security operations of sport venues and events. These individuals create security related policies, procedures, operating plans, create and deliver training, and oversee the selection of other venue and event personnel and/or event personnel providers (vendors). They serve in a command capacity during events and ensure that the event plan is being properly followed and also to provide upper level supervision of event personnel and/or event personnel providers.
